The Social Welfare Ministry has recorded two hundred and twenty six cases of child neglect in 2018.

Child Services Assistant Director Ela Tukutukulevu says these cases include lack of parental supervision, failure to provide medical attention to children in need of it, and children not sent to school to name a few.

Tukutukulevu says the Department has made relevant referrals where needed for the best interest of the child.

“The cases of neglect very simply is when children are unsupervised. So there is a lot of unsupervised children. When we drive down to Lami or other areas we can see that children are just left on their own. They are just crossing the streets and this is where accidents can happen.”

Tukutukulevu says the ministry is calling on parents to supervise their children to avoid unnecessary accidents from happening due to negligence.

Meanwhile four cases of child neglect have been recorded by the ministry so far this year.
