200 children with congenital heart disease are born each year in Fiji says Director of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre, Dr Krupali Tappoo.
The Center that specializes with heart surgeries says congenital heart defects are the most common congenital abnormality in the world.
Tappoo says corrective surgery is the most effective therapy, however, if left uncorrected it can lead to complications such as heart failure, pneumonia, failure to thrive and ultimately death.
She adds early diagnosis and management is the key to standing above the disease.
In order to be able to provide this service to all children even those in the rural areas, a world first mobile heart screening device was obtained by the Center.
The HD stethoscope device will allow the Sai Prema Foundation Fiji in conjunction with the Health Ministry to conduct child heart screenings in the rural villages of Fiji.
This is part of the Foundation’s Project Heart Beat initiative.
