With 1, 200 notices issued for littering in the last financial year, the Local Government Ministry says more awareness is needed for waste management.
Ministry Permanent Secretary, Joshua Wycliffe says out of the 1, 200 notices, 20 cases have been referred for prosecution.
During the handing over of four new recycling waste bins to the Suva City Council yesterday, Wycliffe stresses awareness is needed as well.
“How can I go, use my litter and fine someone for throwing a piece of paper if I have not taken the responsibility to raise awareness, responsibility and accountability in the minds of the citizenry.”
Meanwhile, Acting Head of Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Corrado Pampaloni is also calling on everyone not to throw waste on street, in the sea, on beaches, parks and rivers.
