The $2.26 million allocated for improved drainage systems has been distributed to the 12 municipalities by the Waterways Ministry.

Minister responsible Dr Mahendra Reddy says they have signed an agreement with Municipal Councils for the grants to go towards drainage systems.

Dr. Reddy urged municipal councils to be responsible in maintaining standards.

“Your job doesn’t end there by developing a drainage system, improving or cleaning the drainage system. You need to protect it, you need to develop a system of how you protect this investment that we are making”.

Poor drainage has in the past, caused surface flooding blocking roads and destroying infrastructure.
