19-year-old man remanded in custody

A 19-year-old man alleged to have caused the death of a seven-year-old girl in Lami on Saturday night has been remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrates court.

Deepak Kumar has been charged with one count of murder after he’s alleged to have driven his vehicle along the Queens Road in a reckless manner resulting in the death of a young girl.

The incident occurred at the junction of Foster Road and Tamavua-I-wai after 8pm on Saturday night.

It’s alleged the accused bumped the victim who was crossing the road with an adult and another child.

The Suva Magistrate said this is an indictable offence and transferred the matter to the High court.

The Magistrate refused Kumar’s bail saying that this is a serious matter and is of public interest and in the interest of justice.

Kumar has been told to file formal bail application in the Suva High court.

The matter will be called on August 7th.
