Fiji loses almost 1700 people annually to Diabetes.

Diabetes Fiji Chair Taabish Akbar revealed the figures today in response to the World Health Rankings report which ranked Fiji as the leading country with the most number of deaths related to Diabetes.

Akbar says it does not matter whether we are number one or not, what matters is that we are losing lives that can be saved.

“If we want to argue on the accuracy of this it is quite possible to say that these figures aren’t as accurate as they claim to be but what we need to do is to put aside the differences and say that this is a problem that is facing us and we need to come together to try and solve the issue of diabetes and the reason its increasing.”

Akbar has highlighted that there is no statistics for pre-diabetics in Fiji as people are not screened at an earlier stage.

Meanwhile he is urging people to change their eating habits and lifestyle to be a healthier nation.
