Concerns have been raised against drivers who continue to blatantly disregard weight limits on bridges around the country.

Fiji Roads Authority, Chief Executive Jonathan Moore says 16 deteriorated bridges have been identified and are due for complete replacement over the next 18 months.

However, there’s a serious risk, it could be further damaged or even collapse if overloading continues.

He adds top of their list is the Vesidrua Bridge in the North which is most likely expected to be closed as well as two others along the Nabouwalu-Labasa highway.

Moore says load control on the deteriorated bridges must be observed right up to their last day of service.

He says these irresponsible drivers must realize they’re not only jeopardizing lives but also putting the economy at stake by over-stressing the infrastructure.
