One hundred and fifty eight families have been assisted under the Fire Victim Assistance Scheme so far this year.
Social Welfare Permanent Secretary, Dr Josefa Koroivueta says the assistance provides immediate relief to Fijians who do not have insurance to cover the fire damage.
Dr Koroivueta says they are working together with the Local Government Ministry.
“In the new fiscal the Housing comes under the new ministry, Ministry for Housing and Community development and for us we are provided with a thousand dollars grant basically to meet with the immediate needs but we go out of our way to connect with our stake holders to provide for clothing even to provide for the school uniforms, stationary, shoes and basic food packs.”
The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation has been allocated two hundred thousand dollars in the new financial year to continue assisting those who lost their homes in fire.
One-hundred and fifty-nine Fijians were assisted last year while in 2016 one- hundred and sixty-four people were assisted.
