143 cases of child neglect since January

Child neglect continues to top the list of the Child Services Unit that comes under the Ministry of Children, Women and Poverty Alleviation.

The Unit’s Director, Ela Tukutukulevu says since January to July this year, they have received one hundred and forty three cases of neglect.

“There are different types of neglect some just simple neglect of children not provided proper food, they are not sent to school, some of them if they are sent to school there is no lunch or dirty uniform or some are just left to fend for themselves.”

She says they have also received 91 cases of physical abuse and 76 cases of sexual abuse within the past seven months.

Tukutukulevu is urging parents, guardians and teachers to contact the child help line to assist children who are being abused.
