142 deaths at workplaces in 2017

Hundred and forty two cases of deaths at workplaces were recorded by the Employment Ministry in 2017.

Minister for Employment Jone Usamate says that this is a concern to them therefore Occupation Health and Safety plays a vital role in any workplace.

Usamate says they will continue to pursue the OHS initiatives in both the national and enterprise level by integrating health promotion activities in the workplace, OHS policies, and training and workplace audits.

“I also wish to highlight that work related stress tobacco use and exposure to second hand smoke, the abuse of drugs and alcohol, violence, HIV and AIDS, poor physical exercise and nutrition, sleep disorder and poor rest represent serious risks for workers.”

Usamate says this is one topic that his ministry will continue to advocate on in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
