28 people have lost their lives while drowning as compared to 41last year.
This comes after a 14-year-old student drowned in the Waikalou River in Kalabu Nasinu over the weekend.
The teenager and two other children had gone to the river to recover his flip flops – however he started facing difficulties in the water.
The boy called out for help but disappeared under the water before any help could arrive.
A search was conducted until late Saturday night with negative results.
His body was found by farmer yesterday.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro says barely a few days into the school holidays, drownings are becoming a worry.
She has urged parents and guardians to ensure their children are given something constructive to do over the school holiday.
