231 cases of sexual abuse of children recorded so far this year

An alarming 231 cases of sexual abuse of children were recorded by the Child Services so far this year.

Child Services Assistant Director, Ela Tukutukulevu says these include 30 cases of rape and attempted rape, 68 cases of sexual abuse and exploitation and 33 cases of sexual harassment and molestation.

Tukutukulevu says the ministry continues to work with its relevant stakeholders to help process these cases and make relevant referrals.

“There are agencies who would rather report internally to their supervisors, and that is ok with us, if agencies what to work with cases internally, that’s fine with us. But as the requirement of the act, it needs to be reported first to the ministry.”

Tukutukulevu says some of these cases are currently before the court and in some cases where parents are the perpetrators, the children are taken away from them for their safety.

Meanwhile, 748 Child cases were recorded by the Child Services last year were 130 cases alone were of sexual abuse.
