November 22, 2019 6:27 am

The Fiji Police Force is undergoing reforms to make it the best that it can be.

Responding to accusations of police brutality, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says people must realize that no one is being allowed off the hook.

“There was a case in 2000 its called Epeli Seniloli vs Attorney General and Semi Voliti. Semi Voliti was a 14-year-old boy who was detained by police for 4 hours for an allegation of stealing tin tuna. He was handcuffed to a post outside a police post in Nadera, my point being this issue citing is not unique my issue is has it been dealt with or not are we dealing with it? There are Police as we speak who have breached the law and they are being prosecuted thats what we need to do. Countries like Australia and New Zealand are doing it.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says the government will ensure there are avenues for redress for anyone whose rights are violated.

He’s also confirmed that a $125 million dollar restructure is underway to modernize the Fiji Police Force.

“I’ll tell you when honorable Sitiveni Rabuka carried out the coup in 1987, they locked up the Commissioner of Police P.U Raman in his under pants in the cell at Suva Police Station that’s what they did. The salaries of Police Constables in 2006 was $9,000 per year today the salary range for a Police constable in the 2019/2020 budget ranges from $16,000 to $18,000”

Three police constables are currently in court over allegations of police brutality.
