“As highlighted by Dr Binibo, people are now coming to him because they have used it in other countries as a remedy or as a form of reducing pain, etc,  they expect it to be given to them in Fiji too, we have of course a very shallow understanding of marijuana.

Sayed-Khaiyum also says that everyone thinks smoking marijuana was only to get high, however, there are certain types of marijuana that are used for medicinal purposes.

“We essentially need to discuss this as there is a growing demand for it and many people have argued that perhaps the Harrison act came into place because of the inability to tax marijuana, it could be very easy to tax breweries.

The AG also highlighted that when he was a prosecutor for the DPP, he noticed that many people caught with marijuana were also from a low-income family.
