A total of $112million was lost during the floods in 2009.
Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy revealed the figures while commissioning the new retention Mosi River dam in Nadi.
Dr Reddy says that $85million was also lost in the 2012 floods.
He says constructing the retention dam will not only help people in flood prone areas but it will also help the economy.
“We now need to prepare ourselves, we don’t want to react to any climate change factors that happen, we want to build resilience in the community. We want to build infrastructure that will protect the community that will secure our families and households.”
Work on the new dam at the Mosi River is expected to take around eight months to complete.
This project is estimated to cost $1.9million.
