11-year-old youngest to have adult diabetes

The youngest person to have adult diabetes in the country is an 11-year-old.

National Advisor for Non-Communicable Diseases, Dr Isimeli Tukana says that diabetes in children is increasing and this is a very worrying trend.

Dr Tukana says they need to put more focus on children now.

“Children now have two types of diabetes. One is the common one in them is the type one that means that they don’t have insulin. But now they are getting more type two diabetes and type two diabetes, its main contributing factor is eating, drinking and not exercising.”

Dr Tukana says if they can control diabetes, they can control amputation.

Meanwhile, Fiji is ranked 11th in the Western Pacific region when it comes to diabetes statistics.
