Eleven families staying in the new Lagilagi Housing Units in Jittu Estate Raiwaqa, Suva are on the verge of losing their homes.
It’s been revealed that these families have not paid rent for almost six months despite numerous reminders and warnings.
Speaking to FBC News, Peoples Community Network Director Semiti Qalowasa says they now have no choice but to give these tenants eviction notices.
“They haven’t paid any single cent and they are expecting to have a free ride in all this and so we have given them a grace period of six months.”
Meanwhile, Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission chief executive, Joel Abraham says justice needs to prevail before any action is taken by PCN.
“Now when there is non-payment of rent the distress of rent act applies and there is a procedure that is outline in the distress of rent act which explains how the landlord should go about to recover the debt that are due.”
PCN has been holding regular meetings with the families to look at ways in which they can make up their overdue rent to retain their Units.
