November 9, 2017 5:08 pm

1.5 degrees is not enough to keep the small island nations from sinking says former Kiribati President Anote Tong.

Speaking at the Talanoa Space at the Bonn Zone, Tong says we must look beyond 1.5 degrees centigrade adding that 1.5 degrees will not solve or tackle sea level rise and Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Marshall Island are still going to go under water.

Tong has been at the forefront of raising global awareness about the catastrophic risks caused by climate change.

Tong says there are regenerative development concepts that are available to help us go beyond 1.5 degrees.

Dubbed a ‘climate warrior’ Tong is responsible for a number of other initiatives to combat climate change and protect the environment, such as calling for a global moratorium on using coal in 2015.

He says that in order to tackle climate change, we need to put away our national agenda and become global leaders, not national leaders.
