Traders still tampering with expiry dates: CCF

The Consumer Council says traders are taking advantage of the busy periods as the council has seen expired products being put on the shelves

Council Chief Executive Seema Shandil says apart from expired products tampering of the expiry date is another issue.

Shandil says they had seen this not only through market surveillance but they’ve also received complaints regarding this issue.

“We have seen that new expiry date is pasted on the old expiry dates. In some instances, we were able to go and have the items removed from the shelves. However, sometimes consumers without checking the expiry dates buy the item in question and they must have also consumed it which is not safe for their health.”

Meanwhile, traders are reminded to refrain from selling goods that are not of merchantable quality and to provide appropriate redress in a timely manner for faulty goods sold to consumers.
