Stronger enforcement is needed: Shandil

Chief Executive Seema Shandil says they continue to receive complaints against a second-hand car dealer in Nakasi, Nausori.

The Consumer Council is now forwarding complaints about poor purchase deals to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Shandil says between August and December 2018, they received complaints valued at $16,200 and 21 complaints valued at $23,400 in 2019.

She adds during mediation, the dealer agreed to refund complainants, but this has not happened.

“We have certain limitations in our powers so we are collecting evidence and at the same time we are referring the cases to FCCC as they have the mandate to take them to court.”

Shandil adds stronger enforcement is needed for such dealers to ensure they stop taking advantage of vulnerable consumers.
