Global food prices rise

May 13, 2019 4:43 pm

Fiji has not been greatly affected by the increase in meat and dairy prices around the world.

The increase has been a contributing factor to global food prices rising to its highest level in almost a year in April.

Fiji imports almost all of its meat and dairy products from either Australia or New Zealand.

FBC News spoke to some of the suppliers and supermarkets, who say the increase in meat prices has been happening since last year.

They say there has not been a major increase so far and are mindful that Fiji cannot afford a drastic rise as it will affect consumer spending.

The global food import bill is likely to decline in 2019, but the poorest and most vulnerable countries will not be the prime beneficiaries, according to a new UN report.

FAO’s latest Food Outlook projects worldwide food imports to drop 2.5 percent in 2019 to US$ 1.472 trillion.
