The Fiji Sugar Corporation is undertaking several initiatives to encourage large scale cane development in the North.

FSC Chief of Operations Navin Chandra says this is part of their five year cane development plan which is to develop 12,000 acres of large scale cane farms.

Chandra says the FSC has hired contractors to assist in lifting the productivity of its 1,300 acre Seaqaqa Estate Farm.

He adds the estate development comes under the straight lease option, one of three initiatives that’s now undertaken by FSC to encourage large scale cane production.

Another large scale cane development initiative is the joint venture farms.

FSC says already, there are five in the Northern Division, two in Bua, two in Labasa and one in Seaqaqa.

The third large scale sugar cane farming initiative is the 100 percent option, where FSC is purely engaged in a consultative manner only and the landowners handle cultivation and farming.

FSC charges a 5 percent management fee for this option.
