The Fiji and New-Caledonia relationship has the potential to grow.

Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji has now removed the legal impediments for direct foreign investment in Fiji to liberalize the economy.

Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji is working with the Singaporean government to improve the digitization program which will make it easier for businesses to operate in the country.

He adds this not only creates a new level of transparency but also sets a very fast-tracking system to be able to see investment come to fruition quickly.

Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji has potential trade opportunities available for companies based in New Caledonia.

“Of course there are opportunities for companies that are based in New Caledonia in area of infrastructure for example in road making and various other areas that could provide investment opportunities for them in Fiji.”

Fiji has recently ratified a number of the international convention in the area of arbitration, area of application of cross border laws relating to private sector contracts.

Sayed-Khaiyum says this will also give a level of comfort for trade across borders.

He adds they’ll be setting up a mediation center in Nadi to help independently mediate when there are contractual disputes between different countries and parties across borders.
