Being small should not be an excuse for not conducting good research.

Reserve Bank Governor, Ariff Ali told central bankers that research is a vital tool in the development of economies.

Ali says as policymakers good research lends credibility and improves the quality of policies.

He made these comments while opening the inaugural South Pacific Central Banking Research Conference in Suva yesterday.

“We cannot therefore, make the excuse of being small central banks, as a limiting factor to our research capabilities, because the responsibility and accountability we play in our small economies are immense.”

Ali says the central banks business is about bringing value and benefits to their citizens.

The two-day conference has representatives from Reserve Banks of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Australia and New Zealand are part of the conference.

The conference ends today.
