Fireworks are screened at the import application stage when a list is provided by traders, including technical specifications.

Deputy Secretary for Mineral Resources Dr. Raijeli Taga says the applications are lodged with the Defense Ministry which is later forwarded to them for assessment and processing.

Taga says all imported items are verified once the consignment arrives.

“Licenses are applied through our department, so once the consignment reaches the wharf our inspectorate teams are involved right from the start.”

She adds importers must adhere to the Explosives Act 1937 and Explosives Regulations 1938.

Currently, there are only six importers of fireworks in Fiji.
