The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission says Fijians need affordable internet services.

In line with this, FCCC has reviewed and reduced charges for the FINTEL cable landing station.

Chief Executive, Joel Abraham says the cost of $256,000 for a 10-gigabyte line was initially reduced to $40,000 for 10 gig line and now has been reduced to $640 for a ten-gigabyte line.

“Data is now essential and widely utilized commodity which is essential to business and communication and given that FINTEL has a monopolistic position in the market we took a thorough review of the current rates to ensure accessibility of the services to Fijians.”

Abraham says this has resulted in a reduction in FINTEL’s charges for access to the submarine cable.

The Southern Cross cable is the optical fiber submarine cable that links Fiji’s international telecommunications systems with the rest of the world and provides the bulk of Fiji’s internet and data access.

The changes will come into effect from October 1st.
